China Intellectual Property Summer Institute (CHIPSI) 2008

Welcome to Beijing

Tsinghua University offers easy access to the Forbidden City, Summer Palace, Ming Tombs and Great Wall and Temple of Heaven in the Beijing area.

The class will travel for one week to Xi'an, ancient capital of China during the Qin, Han, and Tang Chinadynasties, with cultural trips to see archaeological sites such as the Tomb of the Qin Emperor and Terra Cotta warriors and the most intact city wall in China dating back to the Ming Dynasty.

Credits

Students completing the program will receive five (5) hours of ABA approved credit.

Tuition, fees and
financial aid

The program fee is USD $2,950 for five credits. Students have the option to enroll in fewer than five credits but tuition remains the same. In addition to the tuition fee of $2,750, there is a flat program fee of $200 which covers the cost of reading materials and various program expenses. Tuition payment, in full, is required by May 30, 2008.

Law students should inquire about financial aid through their home law school. Students applying for student loans are required to notify the Director of Summer Programs, in writing, that a loan is in process and that the student understands he/she is obligated to pay full tuition prior to the start of classes.

Students enrolling are responsible for their own living expenses and travel arrangements. Expenses are expected to be approximately USD $4,450-$4,850, including tuition and commercial airfare from the U.S. to Beijing. You will be responsible for the cost of obtaining your visa, prices vary. Expenses are expected to be CNY 13,651, including accommodations (double occupancy) and meals, and personal expenses but not including incidentals, special arrangements or other travel within Asia. You are also responsible for the cost of your train ticket to Xi'an, price (800 CNY).

In regards to your visa, please note that the summer program in China is only 28 days long, participating students may enter China on a tourist visa. A tourist visa is good for 30 days. If a student plans on being in China longer than 30 days, he/she should enter China on a tourist visa and have the visa extended once in China for a small fee

Housing

Accommodations in Beijing will be at the Xijiao Hotel. Accommodations in Xi'an will be at a hotel in the vicinity of Xi'an Jiaotong University. The hotel used in the past has been the Nan Yang Hotel. The costs for this hotel are similar to that of the Xijiao Hotel.

Meals

Numerous restaurants on and near the hotel and campus provide excellent Chinese meals at a reasonable price. Several franchise restaurants such as Pizza Hut, KFC, McDonalds and Starbucks are within walking distance of both the campus and hotel. Students should be able to eat for less than 160 CNY per day.

Train ride to Xian

Students will be responsible for their train ticket to Xian. The cost of the round trip train ticket is 560 CNY for sleeping berth and 800 CNY for soft sleeping berth, two ways. This money will be collected prior to departure from Beijing. (Please account for this fee in your budget.)

Tuition, transportation and visa costs of the program are in US dollars. Living expenses are in Chinese yuan (CNY or renminbi RMB).

The cost of the Xijiao Hotel has been quoted to us by Tsinghua University to be 398 RMB for a double room and 338 RMB for a single room. (The Olympics have caused all hotel prices to increase.)
