U.S. Copyright Alum Success: The Pierce Advantage

PIERCE LAW TRAINS LAWYERS TO CELEBRATE AND PROTECT CREATIVITY

Measures of Pierce Law Copyright Alum Success

Unlike their patent lawyer counterparts, there is no direct guaranteed "train to success" for copyright lawyers. Unlike patent lawyers who measure initial success by immediate placement in a top patent law firm, Pierce Law copyright alums find success in may legal and professional positions. Because many of the other top law schools with IP programs focus heavily on copyright law and are located in major centers of copyright activity such as New York and California, some find immediate gratification in top copyright law firms. Pierce Law copyright alums find jobs in the same firms, but also are solidly placed in a wide range of organizations including:

  • general firms that do copyright work
  • general IP firms that do copyright work
  • corporate counsel departments that do copyright work
  • publishing and entertainment companies
  • government agencies such as the U.S. Copyright Office
  • national IP offices around the globe that handle copyright law and registration
  • non-governmental organizations that are special interest groups

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, www.bls.gov, expects overall employment of lawyers to grow by about ten percent in the coming decade. Copyright lawyers may have increased career opportunities due to the constant evolution and change within the industry. The greatest career opportunities will be available to those copyright lawyers with exceptional technical backgrounds. Copyright lawyers must be able to make their clients, who may include artists, writers and musicians, comfortable regarding their technical decisions. The Bureau of Labor Statistics goes on to report that in 2006 the median annual earnings for a salaried lawyer were slightly over $100,000.

According to Copyright Lawyer Career Info  copyright lawyers work to protect the creative products of writers, musicians and other artists. They also work to ensure that copyrights are applied fairly and in accordance with the law. Copyrights are an important part of American business and art. Copyrights protect the creators of art, music, thoughts and ideas and other creations, which are generally not covered by American patent law. Due to changing technologies, the role of copyrights is also changing. It is easier than ever before to transfer digital copies of copyrighted material, including movies, video games and music, around the globe in minutes or even seconds. Copyright lawyers must remain abreast of new decisions and cases related to copyright litigation and legislation. They must work closely with clients to assure that both creators and users of copyrighted works are protected to the fullest extent of the law. Many copyright lawyers specialize in litigation, either prosecuting or defending those who have violated copyright regulations.
